Is it Safe To Drink Alcohol On A Keto Diet

The safety of drinking alcohol on a keto diet depends on how well you moderate what you drink. You should go for alcoholic drinks that are very low in carb.

Keto Lowers Alcohol Tolerance, Why?

There’s a greater chance of being drunk faster while on keto. Want to know the cause? Well, you need to firstly, understand how your liver works.

When you consume high carb meals, your liver stores a lot of glycogen. You are able to feel less drunk because of the storage and release of glycogen in your liver.

If you are on a keto diet, the liver does not store much glycogen, and this will cause the alcohol to process faster and thus flow through your bloodstream a lot quicker. In this situation, your alcohol tolerance will be quite low.

Alcoholic Drinks To Avoid While On Keto

There are drinks that are keto friendly and there are the ones that you should completely avoid. Here is a list of some drinks to avoid while on keto:

  • Sweet wines like sherry.

How To Have Alcohol On Keto

There are lots of warnings about drinking alcohol on keto but despite these warnings, you can still have some alcohol without any disadvantages later. The major thing here is to moderate the intake of alcohol. Too much alcohol while on keto would have its negatives.

Here are some tips:

Drink Water: Drinking water after alcohol reduces dehydration. The chance of having a hangover after drinking lots of water after every bottle of alcohol is slim.

Choose Low Carb Drinks: Avoid wines or cocktails that have sugar in them.

Drink Moderately: Yes, you have every right to take on as many bottles as you can, but while on a keto diet, you need to drink in moderation. It will not only keep calories and carbs in check, but it will also reduce the chances of a hangover.

Can You Drink Wine On Keto?

On moderation, Yes! But you need to choose dry over sweet wines. If you asked me a specific type of wine to go for, I’d suggest Dry farm wines, there are low in carbs and have no sugar.

Here are some other kinds of wine and their carb count.
